Mitch Marcus Quintet Live at the Fillmore St. Jazz Festival

recording run at the 2006 Fillmore Street Jazz Festival. My plan for Saturday was to set up shop at the California Street Stage where I had previously made arrangements to record the first and last acts of the day. I’ll have to admit that the 10am slot was kind of rough for me, so I can’t imagine what it was like for the musicians, but the Mitch Marcus Quintet brushed off the early start and pulled off a brilliant set nonetheless. The musicians included Mitch on Tenor Sax, Sylvain Carton on Alto Sax, Mike Abraham on guitar, George Ban-Weiss on bass, and Jeff Marrs playing drums. The quintet was founded in 1999, and they’ve been jammin’ the Bay Area jazz scene ever since. These guys all have some serious talent, and most of them are also involved in other exciting side projects across the Bay, some of whom we’ve archived before.

Mitch and the band were gracious enough to let me post my recording of their complete set here for your listening pleasure. The quality of the recording turned out great, but I had a small glitch right at the start where my soundboard feed wasn’t giving me any levels. So, it’s not until a few minutes into the first song that the full mix of my ambient mics and soundboard really kick in together. But besides that, the next 90 minutes of the tape completely smokes just like the quintet did on this somewhat chilly San Francisco morning in the Fillmore.
