Television networks don't want viewers to switch channels, but they do want them to switch back and forth between viewing platforms. Mary Kathleen Flynn, Senior Editor at TheDeal.com, described methods networks are using to deepen audience engagement online. MTV Neworks formed a distribution partnership with DailyMotion to help its content reach a wider audience, and the station 13/WNET New York is publishing user-generated micro-documentaries on its Web site to give its audience a sense of ownership over the brand. More time spent with a brand online will eventually translate to digital advertising revenue, Flynn said. Digital monetization is clearly a keystone concern for network executives in today's Web environment, but it's not clear that deepened engagement online will cause viewers to travel seamlessly back and forth between television and the web.The Gossip Girl experiment, which TelevisionWeek editor Greg Bauman explained in a recent interview, proved that it's not easy to dictate where consumers view media. When CW didn't post the last five episodes of Season One online, the online audience didn't watch the content on television and the network didn't get a boost in its traditional ratings. The creative partnerships between television and online video might merely expand the audience that is already online, or perhaps older generations will be more willing to go back and forth between platforms than the younger Gossip Girl set, who seem to have a strong online preference. But it is also possible that the flexibility of online video could lure television viewers onto the Web, especially as technology to transfer media from the computer to the big screen becomes more mainstream. This probably won't happen in large enough numbers yet to significantly affect traditional ratings, but all the same, let's home that brand engagement results in digital monetization sooner rather than later. --Kelsey Blodget, Associate Producer

Online video just doesn't measure up against television. Not because the content isn't as good, or the streaming quality is lacking; it's a simple matter of millions versus billions. Before online video can compete with television, it needs to reach a much bigger audience, TelevisionWeek editor Greg Bauman said. This probably won't be a possibility until it becomes cheap and easy to play Web media on a bigger-screen TV.Nonetheless, the day when a small digital studio like Revision3 launches a mega hit isn't far off. Venture capitalists are already putting their money behind the studios they think can pull off a blockbuster. Bauman is also the editor of Web Video Report, launched under TelevisionWeek and now a part of fellow Crane Communications pub The Ad Age. While online news consumption is largely a destination activity, akin to picking up a newspaper, Charles Tillinghast, president and publisher of msnbc.com says that highly distributed model is essential.msnbc.com is the first national news organization to make its videos available via an embeddable code. Beet.TV first reported this development earlier this year. It also has a joint venture for political coverage with MySpace. This is our third segment of interview with Charlie which we taped earlier this month in the msnbc.com offices in Manhattan. PALO ALTO -- "There are no TV journalists," says Charles Tillinghast, president and publisher of msnbc.com in this interview with Beet.TV Nope, he didn't mean that there's any downsizing over at NBC News, he means that video news gathering has no longer television-centric. A few days ago, we visited him at the NBC headquarters at 30 Rockefeller Plaza for this overview of the transformation of video journalism. Blip.TV collaborates with Digitas for The Smart Show from Beet.TV on July 21, 2008 15 views
Blip.TV has acted as a partner to mega digital ad agency Digitas in the creation of Holiday Inn Express' web series The Smart Show, according to Director of Advertising Sales Sam Stahl. It designed The Smart Show destination site and rounded up some of the "smartest shows" using its platform to run Holiday Inn express advertisements, including Beet.TV. A close working relationship with a large agency like Digitas demonstrates how a small web start-up can have a big influence. Blip.TV focuses on episodic content rather than personal videos, and has a largely open source platform. Iraq, Baghdad / Taji – Another neighborhood in the north of Baghdad named Taji is suffering from weak security since the beginning of 2004. Taji was a very dangerous area and overrun by militias. Further, one of the largest joint US/Iraqi military bases in Iraq is in Taji. Because of this there have been many attacks on the convoys coming in and out, attacks on the trucks and drivers delivering supplies to the Taji base. Lots of raids and firefights were happening in Taji in order to control the security situation. Until late 2007, if you will ask a cab driver to take you to Taji they would refuse because it s too dangerous for them. If they were Shi a they may reasonably be afraid of being kidnapped by one of the Sunni militias and found dead a few days later. The Iraqi Ministry of I established more than 100 police checkpoints in the area of Taji along with checkpoints from the Iraqi National Guard in order to control militias and unknown groups. Another well known problem in the area of Taji were the gangs. It is very common in Iraq that if you are driving a modern car and you are driving in a dangerous area such as that around Taji, there is a high possibility that you will return home on foot, if you were lucky and not killed. Tribes in Taji such as Al-Tammimi decided to fight Al-Qa eda and all groups that were related to them. Sheikh Nadeem Hatem Sultan Al-Tammimi, the head of Al-Tammimi tribe in Taji, asked all the sons of the Al-Tammimi tribe to fight Al-Qaeda and to join Al-Sahwa Council in order to restore security in the area. One of the first things this tribe did was to establish checkpoints to search the cars coming in and out of the area around Taji. These new checkpoints were established because there were doubts about the checkpoints belonging to the Iraqi MOI. There were many rumors about the MOI checkpoints not interfering with the work of Al-Qa eda or stopping cars that were laden with guns or explosives. Shops and some schools were closed due to the lack of security, students were killed as well as headmasters and teachers. Many families living there decided to stop sending their children to school in Taji in order to keep them alive. Families became especially worried after 50 students were killed on a road near Taji that lead to the area around the Taji military base. Even for students coming from colleges like Baghdad University or others used to be stopped at fake checkpoints and asked for their identity to know if they were Sunni or Shi a. Kyte has substantially transformed from being a video camera phone sharing site, to a full-blown online video delivery tool for big brands. It is much more akin these days to YouTube or BrightCove than Flixwagon or Qik.Uploads from mobile phones are a small part of the content on the Kyte platform. It's really more about big brands that want customized delivery including a customized video player, branded channels on social networks and other valuable utilities.The Huffington Post is using Kyte to stream the NetRoots conference. 50 Cent uses the Kyte platform to stream an astounding number of clips daily: Nearly 200,000 video views per day on some 30,000 web sites, according Danial Graf of Kyte. Some 22 million videos have been viewed since the channel started in November. Daniel told me that monetization for his company's services will come through ad ad model, unlike BrightCove or the Platform which are paid sofware solutions.
